I got a new monitor for my computer earlier today for my computer. It works fine in 60Hz, but when I put it to 100/110/120Hz, black vertical lines appear on the monitor. Does anyone know what is causing this, and how to fix it?

I am using the VX2268wm ViewSonic Monitor.

Thanks to everyone that helps!

I have had the vx2268wm monitor for about 4 months time now. At first, I had no problems with it, although I did notice some strange behavior: if I played a game using the Source game engine, and then right after I loaded up the id tech 3 (quake 3) game engine, then I would get vertical lines every other pixel. Here are screenshots, not taken by me, but I found someone with the same problem who had uploaded them:

Basically the problem was that I had a dark, vertical line at one pixel intervals. This I could solve by turning my monitor off and then back on.

A little while after, I added a second monitor (not 120hz) and had a dual monitor set-up with extended desktops. After doing this, I no longer had this problem when loading various game engines after another, and so the problem didn't exist anymore.

However, after removing the second monitor, I now receive this problem every time I try to put my refresh rate above 60 hz. One possibility is that I might have removed the cable I used for my vx2268wm when removing the second monitor (as I packed up everything, including the cables used for my main monitor), and so I thought cables could be a problem. At this point, it should be worth noting that this monitor is stated to "require" a dual link DVI-D cable, but I had ALWAYS used a VGA cable with a DVI-D adapter. I cannot recall the reason for doing this, but I have a slight feeling it was 'cause I had some problems with the DVI-D cable that came with the monitor.

At first I thought the cable would be the problem, so I bought a new dual link DVI-D cable, but that did not work. When I plug in a VGA cable with a DVI-D adapter now, I cannot select a refresh rate above 60 hz (which is weird, because as I said, I used a VGA cable for about 3 months with 120hz), and when I can select 120hz with the dual link DVI-D cable, I get the above problem.

I have tested this with 2 different VGA cables that have had 4 different DVI-D adapters. I have also tested with 2 different DVI-D cables, one of which was completely new. I have also tested the monitor on two different computers, one which has an nvidia card, the GTX280, and the other an ATI card, the HD 4890. The latter is mine, and the former a friend's who I tested it with. The same problem occured for both. We both have Windows 7, but I have the 32-bit version and he has the 64-bit.

If I had this problem when the monitor first arrived, then I would instantly say it was a defect monitor, however since it worked for 3 months, and there has been no change except for the removal of a second monitor and possibly the original cable (well, I don't think it was 'original' in the sense that it came along with the monitor, but I do not recall properly, so cannot give a certain answer). Another weird thing is that the first time I started up after removing my 2nd monitor and while using a VGA cable, I could select 120hz, but it didn't work. After changing cables to try something that didn't work, I put the same VGA cable back in, and this time I could not select higher than 60hz, and I never have been able to with VGA cables after this (about 3 days ago). I doubt that there is a special kind of VGA cable that the monitor only works with, especially given that it's supposed to require dual link DVI-D cables, but this is why I'm posting this here.

I hope this is detailed enough to give you insights into my problem.

Thats probably due to your graphics card not being able to handle that refresh rate..I think mine can only handle 60-75 depending on the resolution.

My graphics card (GeForce gtx560) is 3D ready, so it should support 120Hz... I think.
