Permission denied for root :(

Alright so i got backtrack 5 for my USB, it doesn't seem to have an installer so im using console to install apps. The only account is root, however when i tried cd /root/app/ and then ./configure it said permission denied. Also when using /sudo -s nothing happens. I tried chmod as well but nothing seems to happen, however im not sure if im doing it the right way. Please help as quick as possible cooll;

You usually use "/sudo command". Where 'command' is what you want to execute. "/sudo firefox" starts firefox as root.
