Lol, sorry to say this but that is not true. 1 they don't know. 2. they don't give information to crackers if it was about market which it is they wouldn't so they sell more copies.
You aren't understanding for sure... When the very first Windows was released I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be crazies paying for an unknown thing that just came on the market since they already had other kind of "operating systems". What happened? Well Microsoft seemed to be having no costumers and payed some crackers to crack their own software and give free copies so they can be sold for a much lower price or even free. Microsoft gets costumers because of the crackers and the users, I'm sure you'll always try using software that can be cracked. If there is something that can't be cracked people wont use it. It simple. I think before posting you should have looked to the other possibilities, I know it seems stupid but they earn much more money with a crackable software then with a non-crackable.

I agree with Nery. Well partly.
There were no real OS's at the time Windows 3.1 came out.. The first Mac release came a bit later and the only advantage that had was it's failing Graphical UI.
So MS didn't get popular by crackers back then.. Now they get popular by crackers.

Ms Dos was like the first OS and there was no such thing as cracking software back then.
