Ads enabled on site

Hello Coders,

I want to let you all know that I have re-enabled ads on the site for all users (members and guests) so for at least the next month until November 30th you will see ads displayed in topics below the first post as seen here and also below this post:

We took a vote on re-enabling the ads here and those who chose to vote were OK with this or didn't mind either way so the ads have now been enabled. I wanted to do this to get an accurate picture of how helpful these ads are at generating funding for the site because we have had them for 3 years and only achieved £42 for them. I believe this is due to the fact that most members chose to remove them and any revenue generated so far has been purely from guests so perhaps enabling them for all members who use the site the most will help pick things up and I can also see which ads you like to see.

This is a month long experiment and at the end I will share the results. Those of you who originally opted to not see ads on the site don't worry the ads will be removed again on November 30th.

Thank you cooll;

I will be very interested in the results at the end of the month.

42 pounds isn't very much at all, for your sake and for the websites sake I hope it does pickup. I personally don't click on ads but they don't bother me unless they are pop ups or get in my way or make it wait etc. make sure the ads stay relevant to the target audiece (programmers and nerds lol) just joking but good luck!

Hey
I hate ads :)
and think thats the worst thing that has come out of the internet, everywhere you go we are bombarded with ads, When we sign up for Internet access, ie a ISP they dont say we are gonna fill your world with ads, but we are paying them to chuck them at us 24/7.

Its a bit like having loads of junkmail through the door daily :(

well thats my opinion

Chris

I'm also an ad hater which is the reason why I've never put ads all over the site apart from the spot underneath the first post in a topic but then also gave the ability to remove them for people who hate them...strangely some people actually like ads lol.

The problem is if we want the site to grow we need to do some advertising of our own but that costs money which I dont have and one of the best ways of making money with a site is to display ads. After this month trial I may place smaller ads permanently on the site in a less "annoying" spot so we can have the best of both worlds..ads that will hopefully generate some income for the site but not be in-your-face for those people who hate them like me lol.

Since re-enabling the ads last week I have already seen a massive increase in ad impressions and clicks.

So far over 2,540 impressions in the last week. 34 ads were clicked and total estimated revenue generated from that is £2.09 which doesn't sound like a lot but when you compare it to previous months where revenue was average £0.12 and impressions were low it just shows that ads can make a difference and bring in some income for the site.

Unless anyone knows a millionaire who wants to invest in the site :lol:

As promised here are the stats (pretty basic) for last month.

Ads have never been a good revenue earner for the site so last month we did a month long trial by enabling ads on the site for everyone to see if they would help raising revenue if everyone had them enabled. So how did we do...here are the stats..

Image

As you can see from previous months the stats were pretty flat in terms of revenue with page views hovering around the 3,000 mark and revenue less than £1.00 which would be from the guests and members of the site who chose to keep ads enabled and that has been the trend for the last few years. Compare that to last months experiment and you can that those figures more than doubled with ad views reaching near 8,000 and an estimated revenue of £5.50 which is a huge jump when you again compare it to previous months.

So it appears ads can help bring in some revenue for the site and although that amount is relatively small it will help the site in the future and lets hope the new smaller ads on site do just as well.

Good stuff cooll;

It's a good idea putting ads all over the site where they are visible but don't bug people. That way nobody gets disturbed while the revenue gets higher and higher.
