Agust, pirated versions are illegal (I guess) and that's why we should not use it. And hungry, is GiveAwayOfTheDay.com on your watch list? If not, add it... You might get an alternate AutoCad.

I don't think there is a free AutoCAD. You will have to get the pirated version if you want to have one.
Also you can try CNET or download.com for some luck.

I know Google SketchUp is free and similar to AutoCAD, though it doesn't work with 3DS Max formats.

Well you can always try their best, and closest free competitor, which is
Blender of course

plus with you coming from 3ds Max you should get the hang of it pretty fast, plus you can import 3ds max models into it, and save your blender documents as blender projects, cad projects, 3ds max projects, and more...
You can also check into the ones listed below.
Art of Illustion
Wings 3D
Google SketchUp
DAZ Studio
Caligari trueSpace
and
3DVIA Shape
Sweet Home 3D (Strictly for Architecture)
You can also give
Homestyler a try, which is a web based application strictly made for Architecture as well, and it's made by AutoDesk too, but keep in mind you'll need flash installed in order to use it.

In my country downloading is not illegal , but spreading downloads is illegal.
But I don't download things I don't
need (Like adobe flash and such, however, I'm looking for a nice free alternative to flash)
Intellicad looks nice btw
Maybe look for an algorithm to create .3ds files or something and make a program your own LOL *sarcasm*
