Maybe the charger is getting old? Can you screw it open and see whether all wires are connected?

It probably wouldn't be advisable to screw open your charger. You could test that with a voltmeter.

Is there anything in the system event logs at the time when it shuts down?

I do what ever it takes with electricity, if it doesn't work I usually screw it open and see if all wires are well connected :P

Also, one of the wires might be burnt from a power surge or whatever.

The event logs will show when a system crash occurs, they can give clues as to why it might be shutting down.
You can view the logs by right clicking my computer, clicking manage, then click event viewer.

Hmm, do you know how to change the power surge? If not I'd suggest you to go the shop you bought the laptop with the recite and tell then that you need another charger line.

Or you could check the logs and make sure its not just a processor overheating.
