In Terraria, there's quite a few NPCs that you can get to arrive in your little world (which, if you think about it, is a pretty big world for your little character). You start off with one, the Guide. (There's also the Old Man, but that'll be discussed in a different topic.)
All NPCs must have a house made before their arrival. (Requirements: Table, Chair, Lighting (Torches are acceptable), Door, and a Wall (Not a Dirt wall. Must be Wood, Stone, etc. 'Wall' as in 'Background'))
Guide: Tells you what certain materials can Craft (Wood = wooden sword, axe, pickaxe, etc.) along with a few helpful tips that can help you get started. He takes the first house you make (despite the fact that he wanders around more than stay put in that house.)
Nurse: Heals you for a price. In order to get Nurse, you must find a Crystal Heart, use your hammer on it, eat it(?), and wait for her to arrive.
Merchant: Sells you goods such as the Miner's Helmet and Piggy Bank. Earn 50 Silver from your plunders and hunts to get him.
Demolitionist: Sells you explosives such as the Grenade, Bomb, and Dynamite. To get him, find a bomb in a Chest or Pot.
Dryad: Sells you seeds and plants. To get: Defeat a boss (Eye of Cthulhu, Skeletron, Eater of Worlds)
Clothier: Sells you clothes. To get: (See Old Man topic)
Arms Dealer: Sells you guns and ammunition. To get, find a gun. (Smashing a Shadow Orb often gives you a Musket.)
