Hello,
I watched a programe on TV the other day about high speed internet and also my internet is acting up which got me thinking about the internet lol.
We all seem to want faster speeds and I think maybe within the next few years we will all be able to get speeds of around 1gb but what would you do with that connection?. Infact what do you really use your current speed for now?
If you forget about torrents and illegally downloading movies and games etc which takes up most peoples bandwidth (yes we have all done it lol) what is left?. If you have a connection speed of around 3mb then thats fine for online gaming (PC/Console), streaming youtube videos and TV/Movies online (legally) and downloading software etc so why do we really need faster speeds. Ok so yes it would help if you had say 4-5 people in your house all wanting to use the internet but even then around 20mb speed would be fine for normal internet use.
I can see internet TVs really taking off in the future and a really fast connection would be useful for streaming movies to your tv instantly but video is probably the largest of all files we would regularly download online..what else in your daily life would it actually benefit?
Just wondering lol

Maybe minecraft server hosting  My connection can reach up to 50 Mbps and people have still some problems.
But Vik, I think that is mainly your computers fault, or the fact that you run both server and client on the same JVM.

Sometimes when I have both server and client running there is still only one java process(javaw.exe) running.

There is always one process for every app...
I would use that for all my browsing and stuff, i use dropbox and teamviewer, so that amount (1 gbps) would be great. I also play alot on xbox, so thats another reason. Third reason is because we have 5 mobiles and 5 computers that use the internet at the same time.

Downloading games from steam takes a while(well not too long but faster is always better
)

Well, lets...
Website like (twitter, facebook, amazon, google+, and others) are are using new formats more often. Not just HTML, CSS, javascript, jquery..on and on).
And now with Ajax, and some sites using VS/VB Scripting (like facebook) a web request has to send out more data. Plus lets not forget the internet is really gearing to the mobile app user.
So you have streaming video, Audio, movies, (commercials (alot like the t.v.) this all takes bandwidth.
Plus if the world wants "Freedom to Data" well the only way to do that is a "cloud" environment. So there is bandwidth for Sync features.
Then there is online gaming.
More and more people (me included) are using and playing online with there
game consoles (xbox, wii, ps3...whatever) these devices use more bandwidth
then you think. (Google is your friend).
So would i like a 1gb or a T1 connection? YES

Running your own game servers is a pain in the butt. It takes the whole bandwidth away and you can't do anything else.
(And btw, I need some help setting up my GTA IV:SA MP server. If anyone can help, then their most welcome. Just PM me)
